Red Light Cameras Help Stop Tampa Car Accidents

It has been just over two months since new intersection surveillance cameras were installed in Tampa. More commonly called red light cameras, they have already captured close to 13,000 violations in that short period of time. That is nearly double what Tampa police officers would write for an entire year.

Fourteen intersections have been monitored in Tampa since November 1, 2011. The most ticketed Tampa intersection is 50^th Street and Adamo Drive with 2,392 violations being recorded. Fourteen Tampa police officers spend one hour each day reviewing potential violations. Each ticket is for $158.

In addition to additional revenue, the city of Tampa hopes to cut down on the roughly 300 red-light crashes that happen each year. A poll showed that 62 percent of the Tampa residents polled are in favor of the red light cameras. Sixty-two year old resident Pauline Norris is hopeful they will make for safer driving. "I think it's a good idea if they catch people who are running the lights. You see it all the time. Hopefully, they will deter people from doing it."
