Hydroxycut Recall

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning to consumers to immediately stop using the popular weight loss supplements Hydroxycut on May 1, 2009. This warning prompted a voluntary recall from Iovate Heath Science, the makers of the products. Health Problems as a Result of Hydroxycut Use

The FDA issued the warning after receiving 23 reports of serious health problems related to Hydroxycut products, including:

• Liver damage
• Liver failure
• Elevated liver enzymes
• Seizures
• Cardiovascular disorders
• Rhabdomyolysis (a type of muscle damage)
• Kidney failure

The symptoms may appear while using Hydroxycut or over the course of several months after stopping use, and may include jaundice, brown urine, nausea, vomiting, light-colored stools, excessive fatigue, weakness, stomach or abdominal pain, itching and loss of appetite.

Marketed under the Iovate and MuscleTech brand names as fat burners, energy-enhancers, low carb diet aids, and for water and weight loss, the recall included 14 Hydroxycut branded products:

• Hydroxycut Liquid Shots
• Hydroxycut Hardcore RTDs (Ready-to-Drink)
• Hydroxycut Max Aqua Shed
• Hydroxycut 24
• Hydroxycut Carb Control
• Hydroxycut Natural
