The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recently announced a voluntary recall of Dorel Asia wooden bunk beds. The bunk bed recall was initiated because the side rails that run from the headboard to the footboard and hold the mattress in place can split and cause the bunk bed to collapse. To date, there have been 23 reports of the side rails breaking or cracking, and seven reports of minor abrasions or bruises.
Approximately 445,000 bunk beds have been sold in the United States, and 21,700 beds have been sold in Canada. The beds were sold from September 2004 through September 2009 for about $190 at Walmart, Kmart and Target, plus online at http://www.walmart.com, http://www.kmart.com and http://www.target.com.
The recalled bunk beds may be identified by a model number, date of manufacture, “Made in Vietnam” and the Dorel Asia phone number printed on a white label on one of the bunk bed rails; some labels may also read “Dorel Asia SRL.”
Only the models, color and manufacturing date rangers below are included in the recall for repair:

Dorel Asia is offering owners of the recalled bunk beds a free repair kit; until the owners receive the repair kit, they should take down the bunk beds and only use them as separate twin beds.
