Ford Motor Company has recalled certain model 2007 Ford Five Hundred and Mercury Montego vehicles due to a potential fire hazard.
Approximately 2,945 vehicles are included in the recall that were manufactured from September 5 to September 11, 2006. The potentially affected vehicles may have been improperly welded at the connection of the fuel tank and the fuel filler neck spud. In the event of a rear end collision, the fuel tank spud may not be strong enough to withstand the impact, possibly resulting in a crack in the joint. The cracked joint may cause an illuminated emissions malfunction indicator, a fuel odor, or a fuel leak. If the crack is severe enough to allow fuel leakage, an ignition source could result in fire.
Consumers are encouraged to contact their local dealership to have the fuel tank replaced at no charge. Consumers may also contact the Ford Motor Company Customer Relationship Center at 1-866-436-7332 for additional information.
