Reality television star of Real Housewives of Miami’s Alexia Echevarria is suing her insurance broker in a Florida court due to unpaid medical bills following her teenage son’s auto accident. The lawsuit claims the company failed to properly execute her insurance policy. Echevarria claimed she specifically requested a type of extra coverage, but negligence by the broker left that coverage off her policy, and led to be responsible for large medical bills for her son following his accident.
In 2011, Echevarria’s son was the passenger in a car that lost control, jumped the median, and struck an oncoming SUV. The teenager sustained severe brain injuries, which required surgery, and then spent three months in a medically induced coma. Additional surgeries removed his spleen and repaired his pelvis. He is currently undergoing daily speech, physical, and occupational therapy. The extra coverage Ms. Echevarria requested would have covered the medical bills she is currently responsible for as the result of her son’s accident.
It is vital that consumers double-check all of their insurance policies to ensure they have the proper amount of coverage, and to understand the different types of coverage offered when shopping for a car insurance quote.
