The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, FDA, has announced that a Georgia compounding pharmacy has initiated a recall of Avastin injection drugs. Avastin solution for IV injection is approved to treat various cancers, but is also repackaged for use by eye doctors as a less-expensive way to treat macular degeneration. The eye doctors prescribe it â€œoff-label,â€ or without FDA approval. Clinical Specialties distributed the drugs to doctors’ offices in Georgia, Lousiana, South Carolina and Indiana from December 18, 2012 to present. The patients have developed bacterial endophthalmitis caused by streptococcus bacteria
