Best Buy is voluntarily recalling over 5,000 ATG replacement batteries for the MacBook Pro. The lithium-ion batteries are reported as being hazardous due to burn and fire risks. The batteries can possibly catch on fire while charging. There have been at least 13 incident reports, including one in which a customer’s leg was seriously burned.
Both white and black models of the lithium-ion batteries are recalled. The replacement batteries have the ATG logo on them. The white model number is MC-BOOK13W and the black model number is MC-MBOOK13B.
Best Buy is notifying customers who have purchased the batteries through their store or through Geek Squad Protection sold from September 2008 through June 2012. Customers should immediately remove the batteries from the computers. Best Buy is offering to replace the recalled batteries with an Apple brand battery or a $50 Best Buy gift card. Best Buy is not the only retailer who has sold the ATG replacement batteries, so if you have purchased a replacement battery, it is advised that you double-check the model number.
