Asbestos fibers, a dangerous carcinogen, were found in children crayons as well as toy crime-scene fingerprinting kits. The four brands of crayons that tested positive for asbestos were Disney’s Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Jumbo Crayons, Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles crayons, Saban’s Power Rangers Super Megaforce Jumbo Crayons and crayons by Amscan.
If asbestos fibers are inhaled, they can cause scarring and inflammation of the lungs that could result in lung cancer and mesothelioma. The tests conducted by the Environmental Working Group Action Fund showed that up to one million asbestos fibers could be found in a single crayon.
According to experts, even if the asbestos risk is low, children are more vulnerable than adults to toxic material and due to their young ages they are more at risk of developing diseases that develop over time.
The contaminated crayons were sold at Party City and Dollar Tree from February 2015 through May 2015 and the crime-scene toy fingerprint kits were sold on Amazon.com and Toys”R”Us.com.
