U.S. auto safety regulators have discovered that another 5.1 million vehicles may containdefective air bags manufactured by Takata Corp. While previous recalls have included older year vehicle models, the newly released documents reveal 2014 models may be affected.
Over 24 million vehicles have been recalled over the Takata airbags, which can shoot metal and shrapnel into passengers causing serious injuries or death. The airbags have been known to rupture due to exposure to high humidity. Currently, eleven deaths have been linked to the defective airbags.
Ford has recalled 400,000 Ford Ranger pickups from the 2004-2006 model years.
The other recalls include 1.2 million airbags in certain Audi, Ford, Mazda, Sprinter, and Volkswagen vehicles as well as 3.9 million airbags in certain Audi, BMW, Honda, Mercedes-Benz, Saab, Toyota, and Volkswagen vehicles.
Consumers should look out for recall updates from their dealers and visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website to check their VIN number.
