In 2015, over 51 million vehicles were recalled for almost 900 different issues. According to Carfax, there are more than 47 million cars with open federal government recalls, a 27 percent increase from last year. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data reveals that nearly one in five vehicles have recalls and yet remain unrepaired.
Florida, with five other states, led the nation in the highest number of unrepaired vehicles. When cars are recalled the owner of the vehicle should receive a notice in the mail; however, if the car was sold, the new owner may never know that the car had a safety issue. Owners may also choose to ignore the notice and never get the safety issue repaired, increasing the chance of fires, crashes, and serious injuries.
The minivan had the highest rate of unrepaired recalls with one in four minivans on the road.
Behind the minivan ranking was the SUV, which had one in five unfixed recalled vehicles on the road.
The best way to find out if your vehicle has a safety issue and is involved in a federal government recall is to enter your car’s vehicle identification number (VIN) in the NHTSA’s national database.
