The National Coalition for Safer Roads is teaming with communities and organizations nationwide to increase awareness of the potentially fatal habit of running red lights duringNational Stop on Red Week. Running from August 5 through August 11 this year, each day is dedicated to different topics including developing safe habits, helpful statistics, and how to promote red light safety in the community.
With the leading cause of urban crashes being red light running and nearly 9,000 people killed in intersection crashes in the past year, the need for increased attention to this subject is palpable. Despite the public’s general dislike of red light cameras, they have reduced traffic fatalities by twenty-four percent. The NCSR is hoping this week will better educate people on the severe dangers of running stoplights.
