After the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) filed an administrative complaint in December citing that Nap Nanny and Chill Infant Recliners posed serious risks to infants, this month Baby Matters LLC finally cooperated with the recall as part of a settlement agreement.
Nap Nanny and Chill recliners are portable infant recliners used for sleeping and playing. It has a bucket shaped seat and a fitted fabric cover with a harness attached. Since 2009, there have been at least 92 incident reports of infants falling or hanging off the product, some even while restrained by the harness. The incident reports included five accounts of infants who died.
Around 165,000 Nap Nanny and Chill recliners were sold from the years 2009 to 2012. In December four major retailers agreed to a voluntary recall, including Amazon.com, Buy Buy Baby, Diapers.com, and Toys R Us/Babies R Us.
The CPSC claims that there were not adequate safety warnings and instructions and that the design was defective and posed a risk to infants. Baby Matters has responded to the recall to end legal proceedings. Baby Matters LLC is not accepting returns because it is no longer in business. Customers can still contact one of the other retailers for instructions on obtaining refunds.
