A recall effective immediately requests that owners of the Dream On Me, Inc. full-size or portable drop-side cribs cease using these products immediately.
The full-size cribs drop-side rail hardware has the potential to fail or break, possibly causing an infant or toddler to become trapped in the space between the partially detached rail and the mattress; this may lead to suffocation and/or strangulation. If the rail completely detaches due to breakage, then the child may fall completely out of the crib with the possibility of incurring serious
The portable cribs also have the same issues with the drop-side rail hardware as the full-size cribs; however other risks pertain to the portable cribs as well. The portable crib mattress support hardware and the drop-side release latch can break easily. In addition, the slats may loosen or break off entirely from the crib. The exposed hardware also poses a laceration risk for children inside the cribs.
Approximately 22,000 full-size and portable drop-side cribs were sold nationwide at Target, Toys R Us and Wal-Mart stores and online at Amazon.com. The full-size cribs sold for about $200 from January 2006 until December 2009. The portable cribs sold for about $150 from September 2007 until December 2009. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Dream On Me are presently aware of 69 injury incidents involving these cribs.
The recalled cribs are wooden with a drop-side and are painted/stained black, cherry, white, pink, natural or dark brown. The model numbers for the full-size cribs are printed on a label located on the inside of one of the end panels and include the model numbers 613, 615, 616, 617, 619, 628, and 639. The model numbers for the portable cribs are printed on a label on the mattress board and include the model numbers 621, 625, and 627.
Dream On Me will provide consumers with a free kit immobilizing the drop rail on the full-size cribs. Owners of the portable cribs will receive a new portable crib with fixed sides available July 2011 at no charge.
