Mazda has recalled 2008-2009 model Mazda3 and Mazdaspeed3 vehicles due to a possible visibility issue related to the windshield wiper motor. More than 103,300 affected vehicles were manufactured from January 7, 2008 to November 28, 2008.
During assembly, it is possible that the ground terminal of the windshield wiper motor may have been unintentionally bent. Over a period of time, a bent ground terminal may increase the electrical resistance of the motor circuit escalating to a point where the windshield wipers may stop working.
The lost availability of the windshield wipers may cause decreased visibility for a motorist under certain driving conditions, possibly resulting in an automobile accident.
Owners are encouraged to contact the nearest Mazda dealership to schedule a repair. The repair is free of charge and requires the installation of an additional ground harness on the wiper motor.
Owners may contact Mazda’s Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-222-5500 for additional information.
