Toyota and Nissan have expanded a previous recall adding 6.5 million vehicles to the 17 million vehicles recalled due to defective Takata airbags. The new recall includes 1.5 million more Nissan vehicles and 5 more million Toyota vehicles. The recalled vehicles contain airbags manufactured by Takata, one of the world’s largest airbag companies. The airbags have been linked to at least five fatalities in which the inflators can become susceptible to shooting shards of plastic and metal debris on passengers during an accident. The airbag defects seem to surface in hotter, humid regions.
The expanded recall includes 2004-2005 model RAV4 SUVs, 2003-2004 model Tundra pickups, and 2004 model Sequoia SUVs.
Also included in the recall are 2005-2007 Corollas, Matrixes, and Sequoias; 2005-2006 Tundras, and 2005-2007 Lexus SCs that are in humid states such as Florida, Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Louisiana, and Hawaii.
