Wawona Packing Company has voluntarily recalled fruits with large pits, such as peaches, nectarines, plums, and pluots for possible listeria monocytogenes contamination. The recalled fruits were sold at Walmart, Costco, Kroger, and Trader Joe’s stores nationwide and were packaged between June 1st and July 12th.
Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. has also recalled some of its baked goods. The bakery items recalled include cakes, pies, tarts, and other pastries that may contain the contaminated fruit.
Listeria monocytogenes can cause gastrointestinal issues and pregnant women, infants, or people with weak immune systems are the highest at risk for developing a serious infection. In the United States, approximately 1,600 illnesses and 260 deaths are reported due to Listeriosis each year.
