How a Mirena Birth Control Lawsuit May Be Able to Help You

FREE CASE EVALUATION

Mirena attorneys are reviewing potential Mirena birth control lawsuits for individuals that suffered IUD migration, uterine perforation or other serious Mirena side effects.

If you’ve suffered injuries you believe were caused by Mirena IUD, contact a defective drug attorney at Burnetti, P.A. to discuss your potential claim.

What is Mirena IUD

The Mirena intrauterine device (IUD) is a reversible method of birth control manufactured by Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals. The Mirena IUD consists of a small, plastic t-shaped device that is implanted into the uterus by a healthcare provider where it may remain for up to five (5) years. The IUD slowly releases the hormone levonorgestrel, a synthetic progestogen, to prevent pregnancy. The U.S Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approved the Mirena IUD in 2000 for intrauterine contraception and later expanded approval for the treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding in women seeking to use an IUD as their method of contraception.

Mirena Side Effects

Some women who have had Mirena implanted experience serious or even life-threatening side effects, including:

  • Pregnancy
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Birth of a child with a birth defect
  • Infertility
  • Sepsis
  • Perforation
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Embedment of the IUD in the uterine wall
  • Erosion of adjacent areas, such as the vagina
  • Migration
Mirena Migration

Spontaneous migration is one of the most serious Mirena side effects, and occurs when the edges of the IUD erode and puncture or slice into the uterus (perforation). The device may also drift outside the uterus and into the women’s abdominal cavity, potentially causing severe complications, including:

  • Intestinal perforation
  • Intestinal obstruction
  • Infection
  • Adhesions
  • Peritonitis
  • Abscesses
  • Erosion of adjacent internal organs (bowel, liver, spleen, etc.)
  • Migration

Symptoms of Mirena migration include:

  • Lost threads
  • Abdominal or pelvic pain
  • Spotting or bleeding
  • Blood in the urine
  • Recurrent urinary tract infection
  • Cramping

If the Mirena IUD should become lodged in the abdominal cavity, or if perforates other organs, surgical repair is often needed to remove the device. Depending on the amount of damage caused by the Mirena migration, a complete hysterectomy may be required – and more serious complications may even result in death.

Failure to Communicate Mirena Risks

In 2009, the FDA issued a warning letter to Bayer Pharmaceuticals stating their sponsored links on internet search engines failed to communicate any risk information associated with the use of Mirena, inadequately communicated the drugs’ indications, and overstated the efficacy of the drug.

In addition, Mirena’s label only warns of the potential for migration or perforation during the insertion/initial time period; however, it fails to warn users that migration or perforation may also occur at later point during the IUD’s 5-year life span.
