Wrong-Way Interstate 95 Crash

A wrong-way Interstate 95 crash in Volusia County resulted in the death of three persons and serious injuries to another two. The fatal incident occurred on the night of Tuesday, December 29. It came about when the authorities gave chase to a carjacking suspect and the suspect fled.

According to the details shared by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, the pursuit originally began in Flagler County. The suspect was being pursued by Flagler deputies when he fled into Volusia County. At around the same time, the suspect turned off the lights on his vehicle.

Deputies from Flagler County coordinated with Volusia County deputies to alert them about the suspect. As a result, Volusia County Sheriff’s deputies were ready and continued the pursuit as soon as the suspect entered the county premises.

As the deputies pursued the vehicle along the northbound lanes of the I-95, the suspect drove wrong-way into the southbound lanes. At this point, the deputies ended the pursuit and instead started trying to stop southbound vehicles to prevent a collision. The suspect still had the headlights of his vehicles turned off at this point.

The suspect continued to drive wrong-way along the southbound lanes. As he drew close to the exit 260A, he collided head-on with another vehicle at a fairly high rate of speed. The sheer impact of the collision killed the suspect. It also killed the driver and front passenger of the other vehicle.

A second vehicle also became embroiled in the original collision. According to the authorities, two passengers traveling in the rear seat of this second vehicle sustained serious injuries. They were both rushed to the local hospitals for emergency treatment.

The southbound lanes of the I-95 were shut down for traffic for several hours following the collision. Florida Highway Patrol and other local authorities continue to investigate the wrong-way Interstate 95 crash.
