Police Chase Leads to FHP Vehicle Being Hit, Troopers Injured

A police chase that began in Alabama and came to end in Florida resulted in non-life-threatening injuries to two troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol on Tuesday, May 12. The troopers sustained injuries when their FHP vehicles collided with each other during the vehicle pursuit.

According to the details available, the pursuit began in Alabama. A suspect stole a vehicle from a mobile dealership in Alabama. The vehicle was identified as a white Chevrolet pickup truck. Once the Alabama troopers were alerted about it, they began to chase the vehicle. During the pursuit, the vehicle crossed the Alabama-Florida state line via a checkpoint at the I-10.

Alabama troopers had already given FHP a heads-up about the ongoing chase. As the suspect crossed into Florida, FHP troopers joined the chase. It was then that two FHP vehicles collided with each other as they attempted to pursue the suspect vehicle. One of the vehicles involved in the collision was being driven by Lt. Robert Cannon. An FHP Sergeant was driving the other vehicle.

As the two vehicles collided, both sustained significant damage. At least one of the two troopers had to be extricated from his vehicle by the firefighters. Both troopers were transported to the Sacred Heart Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries where they are reported to be in stable condition.

The suspect vehicle, meanwhile, collided into the rear of a semi-truck only at some distance from the state border. The suspect driver then exited the vehicle and fled on foot. However, he was apprehended and arrested a short distance away.

According to FHP, Alabama troopers had originally alerted them about the possibility of narcotics in the vehicle. The identity of the suspect remains unknown for now. FHP is mulling bringing up a number of charges against him, including fleeing the police, driving a stolen vehicle, and attempting to elude.
